Why San Antonio Homeowners Choose Therma-Tru Construction

We provide San Antonio Therma Tru service, repair, and installation across the metro, from classic entry door reframes to full kitchen remodels that incorporate Therma-Tru exterior doors. Our crews pull apart and reinstall Therma-Tru doors on real San Antonio homes every month, so we know exactly how Classic-Craft, Pulse, Benchmark, and Smooth-Star lines hold up under local heat, expansive clay soil, and monsoon-season downpours. We are not a factory-authorized Therma-Tru shop. We’re an independent San Antonio remodeling contractor, which means our recommendations are based on what actually survives here, not what a manufacturer catalog wants you to buy. Why Trust Sawyer Remodel San Antonio for Your Therma-Tru Construction?

A remodeled staircase with wood treads and a slim metal railing

Luca Romano, owner of Sawyer Remodel San Antonio, learned framing, door hanging, and finish carpentry at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College before spending decades swinging hammers across the Southwest. He and his crew have worked San Antonio homes for years, from Therma-Tru Construction in Alamo Heights, TX to full overhauls across the metro. The craft comes first. Everything else follows.

That matters for Therma-Tru work because these doors are precise products. A Therma-Tru Classic-Craft slab is a fiberglass skin over a wood-grain composite core. Hang it wrong and you get binding, warping, and seal failure. Hang it right with the correct frame depth, sill pan slope, and hinge reinforcement, and it will open cleanly through a hundred San Antonio summers. Our technicians see Therma-Tru doors on job sites constantly, not just when one breaks. We know the frame depths, the sill pan options, the hinge prep, and the weatherstrip channels on every major Therma-Tru line. We use genuine Therma-Tru parts when dimensions or limited lifetime coverage call for it, and quality aftermarket components from local millwork suppliers when speed and cost matter more. Every job runs under The Relay Visibility Guarantee: a written price before work starts, live arrival time tracking, and photo updates before and after. You know who is coming, when they arrive, and what it costs.

Common Therma-Tru Construction Problems We Fix in San Antonio

Here are the specific failures we see repeatedly on San Antonio door openings. These are not generic door problems. They are the ways Therma-Tru products actually respond to local conditions.

  • Fiberglass skin delamination on Classic-Craft slabs. West-facing Classic-Craft doors in San Antonio take direct afternoon sun from April through October. The fiberglass skin can separate from the composite core over years of thermal cycling. The door gets soft spots, the finish bubbles, and eventually the slab loses structural integrity. We see this most often on homes in neighborhoods with no shade coverage, like newer subdivisions west of Loop 1604. A delaminated slab cannot be patched back to original strength. It gets replaced.
  • Sill pan rot and missing weep holes on Pulse and Benchmark jambs. Therma-Tru Pulse and Benchmark doors are engineered to shed water, but the system only works if the sill pan under the door has proper weep holes to drain. When gutters overflow during San Antonio’s torrential rains, water pours onto the threshold and sits. If the original installer skipped weep holes or used a flat pan, the jamb legs soak it up. We have pulled Benchmark jambs that looked fine from the outside and found the bottom six inches rotted through.
  • Sticking at the top corner after rain. This is a Benchmark signature issue we see on slab-foundation homes all over San Antonio. Expansive clay soil swells after heavy rain, the slab moves a fraction of an inch, and the door frame torques. The top latch-side corner starts scraping. Homeowners assume the hinges are bad. Usually the problem is slab movement plus a frame that was never shimmed for local soil conditions. The fix is re-shimming the jamb and resetting the reveal, not new hinges.
  • Warped Smooth-Star slabs from storm door closer tension. Smooth-Star doors are fiberglass with a smooth face. They are lighter than Classic-Craft and more flexible. When a homeowner installs a storm door with an over-tensioned closer, the constant pressure pushing against the Smooth-Star slab can warp it permanently over a single summer. We see this regularly on east-side homes where storm doors are common. The repair is not just replacing the slab; the storm door closer has to be adjusted or replaced too, or the new slab warps the same way.
  • Stripped hinge screws on fiberglass edge grain. Therma-Tru factory hinge prep on fiberglass doors uses the slab edge, which is dense but not as screw-friendly as solid wood. Over-tightened or repeatedly adjusted hinges strip out the screw holes. The door sags, then scrapes the threshold. The proper fix is longer stainless steel screws that bite into the frame behind the slab edge, or filling and re-drilling the prep. Cheap wood screws will strip again in months.

Therma-Tru Parts & Our Repair-vs-Replace Approach

A finished basement family room with a media wall and wet bar

We use genuine Therma-Tru hinges, weatherstrip, and sills when the door’s dimensions or warranty coverage make OEM parts the only responsible choice. Therma-Tru components are built to match specific frame profiles, and swapping in a generic sill on a Pulse door can compromise the drainage path. That said, we are not dogmatic about it. For door shoes, brickmould, and exterior trim, we source quality aftermarket material from local San Antonio millwork suppliers. It is often available same-week when factory parts are backordered, and the quality is equal for these non-structural components.

The repair-versus-replace call is honest. If a slab is delaminated or the frame is twisted from slab movement, we quote replacement. A patch on a failed fiberglass skin looks fine for six months and fails again. We refuse to sell that. When a door can be saved with re-shimming, new weatherstrip, or hinge repair, we do that instead and charge accordingly. Call (432) 547-6806 and we’ll tell you which direction your Therma-Tru door actually needs to go.

Our Therma-Tru Service Process – Step by Step

  1. 1
Diagnosis. We inspect the slab, frame, sill pan, hinges, and weatherstrip. On San Antonio slab homes, we look for signs of foundation movement affecting the door. On west-facing exposures, we check for skin delamination. We identify the failure mode specifically, not generically.
  2. 2
Written quote. Before any work starts, you get a written price. The number you approve is the number on the invoice. No change orders halfway through, no surprises at the end.
  3. 3
Repair or replacement. For repairs, we use OEM Therma-Tru parts where dimensions matter and quality aftermarket where they do not. For replacements, we reframe the opening if needed, set the new door with proper shims and reveal, and install a sill pan that actually drains.
  4. 4
Testing. We open and close the door repeatedly, check the reveal on all three sides, run water over the threshold if drainage is part of the repair, and confirm the weatherstrip seals evenly. Then we photograph the finished work and send it to you as part of The Relay Visibility Guarantee.
  5. 5
365-Day Done Right Promise. If it is not done right, we make it right. That is in writing on every Therma-Tru project we touch.

Therma-Tru Products We Service & Install in San Antonio

We work on the full Therma-Tru residential lineup that shows up in San Antonio homes. Classic-Craft and Fiber-Classic entry doors, including the Mahogany, Oak, and Fir collection slabs. Pulse Series doors with their integrated weather resistance system. Benchmark Series doors, which we see more than any other line in 1990s and 2000s suburban construction. Smooth-Star Series slabs and frame sets. We also handle Therma-Tru sidelights, transoms, and door frame components. Our local parts inventory covers standard hinge sizes, weatherstrip profiles, and sill pan materials for fast turnaround on common repairs. Full door systems are usually ordered and in hand within one to two weeks.

We Also Service These Brands

Therma-Tru is not the only manufacturer we trust on a San Antonio job. We install KraftMaid cabinetry on kitchen remodels, Cambria and Silestone countertops on island and perimeter layouts, and Kohler fixtures in bathrooms. Being multi-brand keeps us honest about Therma-Tru, because we are not dependent on any single product line to stay busy.

FAQs – Therma-Tru Construction Service in San Antonio

A remodeled living room with built-in shelves around the fireplace

Can San Antonio sun actually warp a Therma-Tru Classic-Craft fiberglass door? Yes, and we see it every summer. Classic-Craft slabs are fiberglass skins over a composite core, and years of direct afternoon exposure on a west-facing San Antonio opening can delaminate the skin and soften the structure. The door will not necessarily warp like a wood door, but the skin will bubble and separate, which kills the door’s structural integrity. The fix on a delaminated slab is replacement, not repair. Call (432) 547-6806 for a free assessment if your west-facing entry is showing bubbles or soft spots.

I have a Therma-Tru Benchmark door that sticks at the top corner after rain. Is it a hinge problem? Usually not. On San Antonio slab foundations, heavy rain swells the expansive clay soil and shifts the slab slightly. The door frame torques and the top latch-side corner starts scraping. The hinges are rarely the cause. The real fix is re-shimming the jamb to reset the reveal, and possibly adjusting the strike plate. If your Benchmark door sticks after rain, call (432) 547-6806 and we’ll diagnose it properly instead of throwing new hinges at it.

Do you use factory Therma-Tru replacement parts or aftermarket equivalents? Both, and we tell you which one we recommend for your specific door. Genuine Therma-Tru hinges, weatherstrip, and sills are the right call when dimensional fit or limited lifetime warranty coverage matters. For door shoes, brickmould, and trim, quality aftermarket material from San Antonio millwork suppliers is often faster and equally good. We never hide which is which. The written quote specifies the parts before you approve anything.

My Smooth-Star door slabs look wavy in full sun. Can that be repaired, or is it a full replacement? Wavy Smooth-Star slabs are usually warped from storm door closer pressure pushed against the lighter fiberglass panel over one or more San Antonio summers. A warped slab cannot be straightening back out. It is a replacement, but the storm door closer also needs adjustment or replacement, otherwise the new slab warps the same way. We quote the slab and the closer fix together so you are not paying for the same failure twice. Get exact pricing at (432) 547-6806.

Will installing a Therma-Tru Pulse door on my 1950s San Antonio house require reframing the opening? Often yes. Homes from the 1950s in central San Antonio neighborhoods like King William and Monte Vista frequently have non-standard rough openings that were built for original wood doors. The Therma-Tru Pulse door system is designed around specific frame depths and slab dimensions. If the opening is too short, too narrow, or out of square, we reframe to the correct rough opening size before setting the door. That is standard framing work for us, and it is included in the written quote. Call (432) 547-6806 and we’ll measure your opening before quoting anything.

How much does General Contractor Therma-Tru construction cost in San Antonio? Basic Therma-Tru door repairs like re-shimming, hinge replacement, and weatherstrip work typically run from a few hundred to around $1,500 depending on the scope. Full door system replacements with reframing run higher, especially if the surrounding kitchen or entry area is part of a remodel. Here is what full kitchen remodel work runs in San Antonio:

Kitchen Remodel $14,000 – $45,000
