American Standard Bathroom Remodeling: The San Antonio Owner’s Guide
If you have an American Standard tub, shower, or fixture that’s failing, a bathroom remodel in San Antonio typically runs $9,000 to $28,000 installed, depending on how much of the room you’re redoing and what’s behind the walls. Most homeowners call us when they notice water staining below the tub, a shower valve that won’t hold temperature, or grout that stays dark long after it dries. You might be facing a full tear-out, or we might be able to save the bones and replace just the failing components. Either way, you get a written price before any work starts.

Sawyer Remodel San Antonio is an independent contractor. We’re not affiliated with American Standard, but we’ve installed and worked around their tubs, shower pans, valves, and surrounds long enough to know exactly which parts fit and which ones don’t.
Which American Standard Models This Applies To

American Standard’s bathroom lineup spans three main tiers that behave very differently during a remodel. On the entry side, the Americast tubs are a composite material, not cast iron, which means they’re lighter but can crack differently than a true porcelain-over-cast-iron tub. The Princeton and Evolution series sit in the mid-range, with acrylic shells that hold up well in San Antonio’s hard water, though the drain assemblies on older Princeton units are a known weak point. Studio and Ovation are the builder-grade fixtures, and if your home was built between 1995 and 2015 in areas like Stone Oak or Alamo Ranch, there’s a good chance you have one of these.
The fastest way to identify what you have is the model number stamped under the tub’s front lip or on the valve escutcheon plate behind the handle. If it starts with “2390” or “2425,” you’re looking at an Americast-era tub. A “2932” or “7236” prefix points to a more recent acrylic model. That number determines whether the trim kit you found on a shelf at a big-box store will actually mate with your valve body, and it’s the first thing our techs check when they arrive.
When it comes to parts, American Standard OEM trim and valves are well-made, but they’re priced like OEM parts from any major manufacturer. For shower valves and cartridges specifically, we recommend staying OEM because the aftermarket ceramic disc cartridges for the Reliant and Town Square valve lines have a habit of being a few thousandths off, which means a drip you’ll chase forever. For tub spouts, drains, and cosmetic trim, a quality aftermarket equivalent is often fine and saves you real money. We’ll show you both options with prices side by side.

Signs Your American Standard Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing
- Water stains on the ceiling below the bathroom. This is the big one. It usually means the tub’s drain flange or the shower pan’s weep holes are leaking around the seal. American Standard’s rubber compression gaskets under the drain flange dry out and crack over 10 to 15 years, and San Antonio’s dry heat plus hard water accelerates that. The stain shows up long before the floor feels soft, so don’t ignore it.
- A shower valve that won’t hold temperature. If the water swings hot when someone flushes a toilet, the pressure-balancing cartridge inside the valve is worn. On American Standard pressure-balancing units, this is a replaceable cartridge, and we stock them on the truck for the common valve bodies. On older two-handle systems, the seats and washers are usually the culprit.
- Grout lines that stay wet for hours after a shower. Wet grout means the shower’s waterproofing layer has failed, not the tile itself. American Standard makes the fixture, but the tile and pan around it are only as good as the original installer’s waterproofing. If the grout stays dark and you notice a musty smell that won’t go away, water is sitting behind the tile.
- The tub flexes or creaks when you step in. Fiberglass and thin acrylic tubs flex when the mortar bed underneath wasn’t set right or has deteriorated. Over time that flex cracks the tub at the drain and fractures the tile at the tub lip. In San Antonio’s clay soil, we also see slab movement put subtle stress on tub connections in older neighborhoods like Terrell Hills.
- Rust-colored water from the tub spout first thing in the morning. This isn’t always the tub. If you have galvanized supply lines, the American Standard fixtures are the canary: the aerators and cartridge screens catch the iron flakes. It can still mean you’re looking at replacing the tub’s supply lines either way, but we can tell you in five minutes whether the problem is the fixture or the plumbing behind it.

A full American Standard bathroom remodel in San Antonio runs $9,000 to $28,000 with us. That’s not a vague bracket. The low end gets you a direct tub/shower swap with new valve, trim, surround, and basic tile work in a small bathroom, no plumbing relocation. The high end is a gut-and-rebuild: moving drain lines, new American Standard tub or walk-in shower, tile to the ceiling, new vanity, lighting, and waterproofing done to Schluter standards.
What drives the price most is what’s behind the wall. If the studs are sound and the plumbing is copper that’s still holding, you save thousands. If the original builder used untreated drywall behind the tile and it’s been wicking moisture for a decade, the tear-out gets bigger and so does the number. We can’t know that until we open it up, which is why we price the known scope in writing and walk you through any change before it happens, with a price attached, not a surprise invoice.

Every bathroom remodel from Sawyer Remodel San Antonio includes the 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If something isn’t done right, we make it right. No argument, no chasing us down. We also run everything under The Relay Visibility Guarantee: you know who’s coming, when they arrive, and what it costs before the work starts. For American Standard fixture warranties, the manufacturer covers defects in the tub, valve, or trim. Our workmanship warranty covers the install. We’ll register the product warranty for you so it’s on file.
DIY or Call Us?
The one thing homeowners can safely do is identify the issue: check for visible cracks, run the shower and watch the drain, note whether the valve drips after you turn it off. That information saves time when you call. What you shouldn’t do is pull a bathtub or shower pan yourself. The drain flange, waste-and-overflow assembly, and the valve body all sit in a wet area, and a wrong seal there leaks into the ceiling below or drips onto the subfloor for months before you see it. We’ve fixed enough DIY tub replacements in San Antonio to know the repair costs more than the original install would have.
If water is involved and it goes behind the wall, call us. (432) 547-6806. We’ll send someone who knows American Standard hardware, can identify the model in the first ten minutes, and gives you a written estimate. Free, no callbacks chasing you, no four-hour windows.
FAQs

Acrylic and Americast tubs generally last 15 to 25 years in San Antonio’s climate; however, the drain gaskets, valve cartridges, and shower waterproofing typically fail well before the tub itself, often within 10 to 15 years. Call (432) 547-6806 and we’ll tell you honestly whether your tub is done or just your seal.
Yes, if the damage is limited to the drain seal, the valve cartridge, or surface chips and scratches, we can usually repair the tub in place for far less than a full remodel. If the tub is cracked through the shell or the waterproofing behind it has failed, a patch is throwing good money after bad, and we’ll tell you that too.
A tub or shower replacement typically takes 3 to 5 working days, while a full bathroom remodel runs 2 to 4 weeks, depending on the extent of the tear-out and whether you’re changing the plumbing layout; we give you the dates in writing before work starts. The schedule we hand you is the schedule we keep.
We stock the common American Standard pressure-balancing cartridges, tub spouts, and drain assemblies for the Princeton, Reliant, and builder-grade valve lines so most repairs don’t need a second trip. If your model needs an uncommon part, we order OEM directly and tell you the arrival date before we leave your house.
