Sterling Fence Installation: The San Antonio Owner’s Guide

Sterling fence installation in San Antonio typically runs $3,500 to $9,000 for a full perimeter, depending on footage, terrain, and whether we’re pulling old posts or starting fresh. Most sections we replace are done in a day, and you’ll get a written price before we touch anything. The usual discovery path: a post leaning after a storm, a gate dragging on concrete, or a section that’s started to rot at ground level where sprinkler splash hits it all summer.

If you’ve got a Sterling fence that’s failing, the fix usually isn’t the whole fence. It’s specific posts, rails, or panels. Matching the material right matters more than most homeowners expect, because vinyl and wood both shift in San Antonio’s clay soil, and a fence that looked fine in April can be out of square by August.

Which Sterling Models This Applies To

Sterling fence lines break down into a few families: standard vinyl privacy panels, semi-privacy with scalloped or lattice tops, and post-and-rail for ranches and larger lots. The compatibility gotcha we run into constantly is the rail profile. Sterling uses a specific tongue-and-groove rail channel that is not universal. A generic box-store rail will not seat correctly, and forcing it means you’re fighting the panel the entire install and it will pop in the first strong wind.

To identify what you have, look at the bottom rail of a panel. Sterling stamps its name and a date code inside the channel on most post-2012 lines. If that’s gone, measure the wall thickness of the post: Sterling’s residential line runs .135 to .150 inches, which is thicker than most off-the-shelf vinyl. For replacement parts, we recommend OEM for anything structural (posts, rails, corner posts) because the wall thickness is matched. For decorative caps and lattice toppers, quality aftermarket pieces work fine and save real money.

One more thing: we are an independent San Antonio fence installer and repair company, not affiliated with Sterling. That matters because we’re not tied to one product line. If a certain Sterling panel is backordered or discontinued, we’ll tell you straight and give you options that actually match.

Signs Your Sterling Fence Installation Is Failing

  • Posts leaning or tilting. This is almost always a footing problem, not a post problem. San Antonio’s expansive clay soil swells when wet and shrinks when dry, which slowly works posts out of plumb. A post that’s two inches out of vertical needs a re-set, not a brace.
  • Gate dragging or refusing to latch. The hinge side post has shifted, or the gate frame has sagged. On Sterling vinyl gates, the aluminum stiffener inside the bottom rail corrodes over time, especially near sprinkler overspray. Once that stiffener is compromised, the gate drops.
  • Panels rattling or pulling out of the rails. The channel that holds the panel tongue has spread. This happens after years of thermal cycling. San Antonio sees 100-degree days followed by 40-degree winter nights, and vinyl expands and contracts enough to fatigue those channels.
  • Discoloration that doesn’t wash off. Surface dirt cleans up. Mildew that has penetrated the vinyl doesn’t. If your white fence has turned a dull gray-green that doesn’t respond to a hose, that’s oxidation and embedded growth, sign that the material is nearing the end of its cosmetic life.
  • Bottom rails sagging between posts. This shows up on longer runs where the span was overbuilt. Sterling panels are rated for a maximum six-foot post spacing on flat ground. Anything wider, and the bottom rail carries weight it was never designed to hold.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For San Antonio, expect $3,500 to $9,000 on a full Sterling fence installation. Shorter runs or a few replacement sections land lower, typically $1,200 to $4,500 depending on how many posts need re-setting. What drives the range: linear footage, whether old posts have concrete footings that need breaking out, gate hardware condition, and access. A fence along an alley with power lines overhead costs more than an open backyard run.

Every quote includes the parts, labor, disposal of old material, and a written line-item breakdown before work starts. No change orders at the door. Our 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the install: if it’s not done right, we make it right. We don’t ask you to invoke a warranty clause. If something we installed fails within a year, you call, we return, no argument.

DIY or Call Us?

If you’re reasonably handy, you can check a few things before calling anyone: confirm which side of the fence is yours (San Antonio property lines matter), mark where posts have shifted, and check gate hardware for visible corrosion. That’s useful information, and it helps you talk to any contractor intelligently.

Where DIY goes wrong is post setting. Digging out old concrete footings in San Antonio clay is not a weekend job. It’s heavy, the holes fill with water after rain, and if you don’t set the new post below the frost line with proper drainage gravel, you’ll re-do it in two years. Vinyl also becomes brittle in the heat; forcing a panel into an unmatched rail channel cracks it. If you’re dealing with anything structural, call us at (432) 547-6806 and we’ll send someone who does this weekly, not once.
