Quikrete Bathroom Remodeling: The San Antonio Owner’s Guide

A full Quikrete bathroom remodel in San Antonio typically runs $9,000 to $28,000 installed, depending on whether you’re doing a cosmetic refresh or a gut-and-rebuild with new waterproofing, shower pan, and Quikrete underlayment. Most homeowners call us after they notice water staining at the shower base, cracked grout that keeps coming back, or tile that’s started to flex underfoot. The Quikrete products we install most are their mortar mixes, self-leveling underlayment, and shower pan systems, and we stock the common formulations on our trucks so we’re not running to a supply house mid-job. Sawyer Remodel San Antonio is an independent contractor, not affiliated with Quikrete, but we install and match their product lines across the San Antonio metro every week.

Which Quikrete Models This Applies To

Quikrete’s bathroom-relevant lineup breaks into three buckets: dry-pack mortar (their Sand/Topping Mix and Floor Mud), self-leveling underlayment (Quikrete Self-Leveling Floor Resurfacer and Fast-Setting Underlayment), and water-resistant patching compounds. The gotcha most homeowners hit is buying the wrong PSI rating. Quikrete sells 5000 PSI mix right next to their sand/topping mix, and the stronger stuff is harder to feather and screed, which gives you a wavy floor that telegraphs through your tile. For a shower pan you want the Sand/Topping Mix at a 4:1 or 5:1 ratio with sand and water, mixed dry enough to hold a ball. If you’re pouring a floor before LVP or tile, the self-leveler needs to go down at the right depth for your substrate. Too thin and it cracks. In San Antonio’s clay-rich soil, houses move, and Quikrete floors poured this decade are more likely to fail from slab movement than from the product itself. That’s a compatibility issue no bag label warns you about.

Signs Your Quikrete Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing

  • Hollow-sounding tile near the drain or around the toilet flange. The Quikrete bed underneath has crumbled or lost its bond to the slab. Water gets in, the mud bed erodes, and you hear that dead tapped sound before you see anything.
  • Cracks that run in a straight line across a tile floor. That’s usually the self-leveling underlayment reflecting a slab crack. Cosmetic fixes fail because the crack transfers straight through.
  • Grout lines in the shower that stay damp for days. A proper Quikrete dry-pack pan slopes water to the drain. When you have standing moisture in the grout, the pan either wasn’t sloped right or the waterproofing over it failed.
  • Soft spots or deflection in the bathroom floor. If the floor moves when you step near the vanity or tub, the substrate below the Quikrete may be compromised. Tile doesn’t flex. Underlayment does.
  • Musty smell you can’t trace. Water is trapped between the Quikrete mud bed and the waterproofing layer, or it wicked into the curb. By the time you smell it, you usually need a full pan replacement.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what we typically see across San Antonio:

  • Quikrete shower pan replacement (standard 36×36 to 48×48): $3,500 – $8,500 including demo, new dry-pack pan, waterproofing, tile, and drain assembly.
  • Full bathroom remodel with Quikrete underlayment and mortar work: $9,000 – $28,000 depending on size, fixtures, and whether we’re moving plumbing.
  • Small bathroom, cosmetic refresh with new Quikrete floor pour: $5,000 – $12,000.
  • Floor leveling only (Quikrete self-leveler, no tile): $800 – $2,500 depending on square footage and pour depth.

The range swings on three things: whether the existing pan or floor has to come out down to the slab, what tile and fixtures you’re putting back, and whether water damage spread to the subfloor or framing. Every bid includes the written price before work starts, and the 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the install. If the mud bed or underlayment we pour fails within a year, we’re back to fix it, no argument.

DIY or Call Us?

Here’s the honest split. You can absolutely mix a bag of Quikrete and patch a small floor dip. What gets people in trouble is shower pans and full leveling pours. Mixing dry-pack mortar too wet or too dry changes the compressive strength and the slope, and a poorly built pan leaks silently for years before you see it. The water travels. It rots the subfloor and the joists. By the time you notice the ceiling stain in the room below, you’re not fixing a shower, you’re reframing a floor. Mixing mortar isn’t dangerous like gas or electrical work, but getting water management wrong in San Antonio’s heat and humidity turns a $200 bag of Quikrete into a $15,000 repair. If you’re not sure, call (432) 547-6806 and we’ll tell you straight whether it’s a weekend project or a pull-the-permit job.
