IKO Kitchen Remodeling: The San Antonio Owner’s Guide

IKO kitchen remodeling in San Antonio typically runs $14,000 to $45,000 installed, depending on whether you’re refreshing cabinets and counters or gutting the whole room. We stock IKO-compatible cabinet hardware, hinges, drawer slides, and trim kits on our trucks, and most repair calls are completed in a single visit. The way most San Antonio homeowners discover a failed IKO component is simple: a drawer stops closing flush, a cabinet door sags on its hinge, or the laminate edge on a counter starts peeling after a few humid summers.

Luca Romano has torn apart enough kitchens across Alamo Heights, Stone Oak, and the Dominion to know that IKO cabinetry and millwork fail in predictable ways. The good news is that most failures are mechanical, not structural. A hinge, slide, or edge band doesn’t mean you need a new kitchen. It means you need the right part, matched correctly, installed by someone who knows IKO’s tolerance specs.

We’re an independent San Antonio remodeling contractor, not an IKO dealer or factory rep. That matters because we’re not trying to sell you a full cabinet replacement when a $12 hinge will fix it. We install what works and charge a written price before the first tool comes out.

Which IKO Models This Applies To

IKO manufactures cabinetry across several lines commonly installed in San Antonio homes, including the Shaker, Slab, and Thermofoil series. The compatibility gotcha most owners hit: IKO’s European-style concealed hinges come in 35mm and 26mm cup diameters, and the two are not interchangeable. If you buy a 26mm hinge for a 35mm door bore, you’ll wind up drilling new holes and ruining a perfectly good door front.

The fastest way to identify what you have is to pull one hinge off and look at the stamped number on the mounting plate. IKO stamps their hinge plates with a three-digit code that corresponds to the overlay (half, full, or inset). If the stamp is worn off, measure the door overlay with a tape measure. Full overlay doors cover the cabinet frame by roughly 3/4 inch. Half overlay covers about 3/8 inch. Inset doors sit flush inside the frame.

For OEM versus aftermarket: IKO OEM hinges and slides are solid but overpriced for what you get. We routinely install Blum, Salice, and Grass aftermarket hardware that meets or exceeds IKO’s factory spec at 40 to 60 percent of the OEM price. For cabinet boxes, doors, and face frames, stick with IKO or exact-match refacing. Mixing manufacturers on structural cabinet parts creates gaps that San Antonio’s summer humidity will turn into visible seams.

We also work with KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone components for kitchens that blend IKO cabinets with third-party counters and surfaces. If your IKO cabinets pair with a Cambria quartz top, we treat the seam between them as its own installation point, not an afterthought.

Signs Your IKO Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing

  • Drawer closes halfway then stops with a grinding sound. The undermount slide has a broken ball bearing retainer. This happens on IKO’s standard full-extension slides after roughly 8 to 12 years of daily use, faster in San Antonio homes where dust and hard water mineral film accumulate in the track.
  • Cabinet door sits lower on the latch side than the hinge side. The hinge cup has fatigued. On IKO’s 35mm concealed hinges, the internal spring loses tension over time, and the door sags by 1/8 to 1/4 inch. Tightening the adjustment screw buys a month at most. The hinge needs replacement.
  • Thermofoil or laminate edge is lifting along the counter’s front lip. San Antonio’s humidity cycle, dry winters and muggy summers from May through September, causes the adhesive under IKO’s edge banding to break down. Once water gets behind the band, the MDF core swells and the damage accelerates.
  • Soft-close mechanism stopped catching, so doors slam shut. The damper inside the hinge cup has leaked its oil. IKO’s soft-close hinges are sealed units, so there’s no refilling them. The hinge gets swapped, not repaired.
  • Cabinet box shelves are bowing under normal dish loads. IKO’s standard 5/8-inch particleboard shelves span up to 30 inches without a center support. Over time, especially in humid conditions, they sag permanently. If the shelf has more than 1/8 inch of deflection at center, replace it with 3/4-inch plywood shelving that we cut to fit.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

An open kitchen and dining area after a remodel

For IKO component replacement in San Antonio, you’re looking at these installed ranges:

  • Hinge replacement (per door, including hardware and labor): $45 to $120
  • Drawer slide replacement (per drawer, including hardware and labor): $80 to $200
  • Edge banding repair (per linear foot): $15 to $35
  • Shelf replacement with 3/4-inch plywood (per shelf, cut and installed): $60 to $150
  • Full cabinet re-facing with IKO-compatible doors and veneers: $8,000 to $20,000
  • Complete IKO kitchen remodel with counters, backsplash, and hardware: $14,000 to $45,000

The range comes down to access, damage extent, and whether we’re matching existing finishes or upgrading. A single failed hinge in a corner cabinet costs less than the same hinge on a cabinet that requires removing a lazy Susan to reach. Every quote includes parts, labor, and cleanup. We write the price before we start, and that’s the number on the invoice. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers every component we install: if it fails within a year, we fix it on our dime.

DIY or Call Us?

Replacing an IKO hinge or drawer slide is a mechanical job with small parts and precise tolerances. If you’re handy with a screwdriver and a tape measure, you can handle a single hinge swap. Two things to check before you start: the hinge cup diameter (35mm versus 26mm, which we covered above) and whether the new hinge’s screw holes line up with IKO’s factory bores. Forcing a mismatched screw pattern splits the particleboard and you’ll need a new door.

Where DIY goes wrong on IKO kitchens in San Antonio is edge banding and anything involving the cabinet box itself. Edge banding requires a heat gun, a trim router, and patience; a bad application looks worse than the peel you started with. And any structural fix, a sagging shelf spanning more than 30 inches, a cracked face frame, a separated cabinet joint, is work where a mistake means buying a new cabinet. If you’re not completely sure what part you need, call us at (432) 547-6806 and describe the symptom. We’ll tell you whether it’s a $10 hinge or a $400 cabinet box before anyone gets in a truck.
