Sakrete Driveway & Pavers: The San Antonio Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Sakrete-compatible driveway and paver materials across San Antonio, with most paver driveway installations running $7,000 to $18,000 and concrete driveways landing between $4,500 and $12,000 depending on square footage, site prep, and the specific Sakrete product line you’re using. Most homeowners call us after spotting hairline cracks that widen after a hard rain, edges that crumble under the Texas sun, or pavers that have shifted enough to trip a delivery driver. The good news: we keep the common Sakrete products and compatible materials on hand, and we can usually match what you already have without waiting on a special order.

We’re an independent San Antonio contractor, not affiliated with Sakrete, but we’ve built enough driveways and paver patios with their products to know exactly what works and what doesn’t in this climate.

Which Sakrete Models This Applies To

Sakrete doesn’t make “driveways” as a single product. They manufacture the bagged concrete mixes, paver sand, polymeric sand, and resurfacing compounds that driveways and paver installations are built from. The part that fails is rarely a single component. It’s usually the layer you can’t see: the base material under the pavers, or the concrete mix that wasn’t spec’d for San Antonio’s freeze-thaw cycling and clay-heavy soil.

The most common Sakrete products we work with in San Antonio are High-Strength Concrete Mix (4,000 PSI), Sand Mix for topping and patching, Paver Set for laying pavers, and polymeric sand like Sakrete PermaSand for locking joints. If your driveway was poured with standard 3,000 PSI mix instead of a 4,000 PSI blend, that’s a compatibility gotcha: the lower-strength mix will spall and crack faster under vehicle weight. Check the empty bag notation from the original job, or look for visible aggregate size and color consistency. Aftermarket equivalents from Quikrete or local suppliers like Texas Concrete Supply work fine, but they must match the PSI rating and aggregate size, not just the bag color.

When it comes to OEM versus aftermarket for Sakrete specifically, the honest answer is that bagged concrete is bagged concrete as long as the spec sheet matches. The failure point in most San Antonio driveways isn’t the mix quality. It’s the preparation underneath.

Signs Your Sakrete Driveway & Pavers Are Failing

  • Hairline cracks that widen after rain. Water gets in, the clay soil beneath expands and contracts, and a 1/16-inch crack becomes a quarter-inch channel within two seasons. This is the San Antonio clay problem, and it’s the number one failure mode we see.
  • Crumbling edges along the driveway lip. If the original pour didn’t include proper edging or the concrete was over-watered during finishing, the edges lose strength first. Every tire that rolls off the edge chips a little more away.
  • Sunken pavers or low spots that hold water. The base layer was never compacted properly, or erosion from poor drainage washed the sand out. You’ll see standing water after a storm that takes days to dry.
  • Polymeric sand turning to dust between pavers. In San Antonio heat, cheap sand breaks down fast. Once the joints empty out, pavers start shifting, and weeds move in.
  • White chalky residue blooming on the surface. Efflorescence means water is moving through the concrete. It’s a cosmetic warning: structurally, the slab is already absorbing water it shouldn’t be.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A remodeled laundry and mudroom with a bench, cubbies and painted cabinets

For a full paver driveway replacement in San Antonio, you’re looking at $7,000 to $18,000 installed. For a concrete driveway using Sakrete-compatible mix, it’s $4,500 to $12,000. Driveway sealing runs $250 to $700. What drives the range: square footage, how much of the old base has to be removed, whether we need to bring in fill to re-grade, and access to the site. A narrow Alamo Heights driveway with a retaining wall on one side costs more per square foot than an open lot in Stone Oak because of the labor involved in managing the pour.

Every quote includes tear-out of the old surface, base prep and compaction, material, install, and cleanup. The written price you approve is the price on the invoice. No change orders unless the ground itself turns out to be hiding something, and even then we show you what we found before we touch the number. The work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it’s not right, we make it right, in writing.

DIY or Call Us?

Bagged concrete and pavers look deceptively simple. You can absolutely patch a small crack or re-sand a few paver joints yourself with a trip to Home Depot. What you shouldn’t DIY is a wholesale paver reset or a full driveway repour. The danger isn’t the concrete. It’s the base work. A San Antonio driveway built without proper compaction will settle unevenly within a year, and now you’ve spent $3,000 on materials to save $4,000 in labor, and you’re paying someone to tear it all out anyway.

Luca Romano was trained at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College, and he’s the first to tell you the pour is the easy part. It’s what’s underneath the pour that matters. If you’re not sure whether your driveway needs a patch or a full replacement, call (432) 547-6806 and we’ll tell you straight. The craft comes first. Everything else follows.
