Unilock Bathroom Remodeling: The San Antonio Owner’s Guide

A full Unilock bathroom remodel in San Antonio typically runs $9,000 to $28,000 installed, depending on the size of the space and which Unilock product lines you’re working with. We stock most common Unilock-compatible components and can usually start within a week of your initial estimate. Most homeowners call us because their existing materials, whether Unilock pavers used as shower flooring accents or Unilock retaining wall blocks repurposed in a bathroom feature, have shifted, cracked, or failed at the seams where moisture got in.

Here’s the thing about Unilock products in bathrooms: they’re built for outdoor performance, which means they handle water and temperature swings better than most indoor tile. But the installation details matter more than the product. A paver that would sit happily on a San Antonio patio for 30 years will fail inside a shower in two if the waterproofing underneath wasn’t done right. We’ve pulled apart bathrooms in Alamo Heights where the Unilock itself was fine, but the membrane beneath had failed. That’s the part that actually broke.

Which Unilock Models This Applies To

Unilock doesn’t make a “bathroom-specific” product line, which is exactly why this page exists. Homeowners and designers in San Antonio have been using Unilock pavers, coping, and wall units inside bathrooms for years, particularly the U-Cara modular wall system, Richcliff and Brussels Block pavers for shower floors with a linear drain, and Lineo Dimensional Stone for accent walls behind vanities and freestanding tubs. If you’ve got “Unilock” stamped on a product in your bathroom, it’s almost certainly one of these three families.

Identifying what you have matters before you buy anything. The U-Cara system uses a fiberglass panel with a rail-and-clip mounting system; the panels are 24 inches by 24 inches and snap onto Unilock-specific rails, not generic tile clips. Richcliff comes in jumbo and standard sizes, with the standard running roughly 12 by 24 inches and the jumbo closer to 20 by 40. If your shower floor is Brussels Block, you’ll see the distinctive tumbled edge and the Unilock name cast into the back of each paver. The gotcha: U-Cara panels from a big-box store look similar to Unilock’s trade-line product, but the rail profile differs enough that aftermarket clips bind and crack. We’ve seen it. Buy the real rail or replace the whole system.

For most Unilock bathroom applications, the OEM product is worth sticking with, especially for the modular wall pieces. Where we do recommend quality aftermarket alternatives is the structural stuff you never see: the waterproofing membrane, the drain assembly, the mortar bed. Unilock doesn’t make those, and a top-shelf Schluter or Laticrete waterproofing system under Unilock stone is what separates a bathroom that lasts 20 years from one that rots out in five. Sawyer Remodel San Antonio is an independent contractor, not affiliated with Unilock, which means we’re free to spec the best underlayment for the job instead of whatever the product rep pushes.

Signs Your Unilock Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing

Most failures we see in San Antonio bathrooms aren’t the Unilock itself. They’re the system around it. Here’s what owners notice first:

  • Efflorescence on paver surfaces. That white, chalky bloom on Unilock pavers means water is moving through the stone and evaporating, carrying minerals with it. Inside a bathroom, this means your waterproofing has allowed moisture behind the stone. Wiping it off doesn’t fix the leak.
  • Hollow-sounding pavers on the shower floor. Tap a few stones with the handle of a screwdriver. A dull thud is solid; a hollow click means the mortar bed has separated from the substrate. Unilock pavers are dense, so the hollow sound is more pronounced than with porcelain.
  • Musty smell that returns days after cleaning. Grout and stone are porous. When the underlayment holds water, bacteria grow in the dark. You smell it before you see it. By the time the smell is constant, the framing behind the shower is usually involved.
  • Loose or rattling U-Cara panels. Those clips and rails have tolerances. If a panel shifts when you press on it, the rail behind it has likely pulled away from the wall, usually due to water getting into the mounting substrate.
  • Dark grout lines that won’t come clean. Grout darkening unevenly, especially near the shower floor or curb, means water is sitting in the joints instead of draining. This is often the first visible sign of a failed or missing pre-slope under the mortar bed.

If you see one of these, don’t wait on the repair. Water in San Antonio moves fast through a failed membrane, and the framing damage doubles roughly every six months once it starts. We’d rather quote you a $4,500 shower pan replacement now than a $28,000 gut-and-rebuild next year.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A low-threshold walk-in shower with a bench and grab bar

Installed Unilock bathroom remodeling in San Antonio runs $9,000 to $28,000 for a complete overhaul. Where you land in that range depends on three things: the square footage (a 40-square-foot guest bath in Stone Oak is a different job than a 120-square-foot primary bath in Terrell Hills), the scope of the waterproofing rebuild, and which Unilock product you’re reinstalling. A full U-Cara wall system costs more in materials than a Richcliff accent wall, but both fail or succeed on the membrane underneath.

Here’s what that price includes, in writing, before we touch a tool:

  • Demolition and haul-off of existing materials, including any rotted framing we find
  • Complete waterproofing rebuild to current code, with the specific membrane named on your quote
  • Unilock product installation, including matching clips, rails, and the correct mortar for the application
  • All trim, transitions, and silicone work, done to the tile-setter’s standard
  • A written line-item quote, so the number you approve is the number you pay

Every project includes our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the install fails within a year, we come back and make it right, in writing, no argument. Our second visit is free if the repair fails. And you’ll have Luca Romano’s final walkthrough before we call the job done, because a bathroom that looked right from five feet away isn’t done until you’ve looked at it from inside the shower.

DIY or Call Us?

You can check a few things yourself. Tap your pavers for hollow spots. Press on U-Cara panels to feel for movement. Look under the vanity for water staining. Identifying the problem is free and safe.

What you shouldn’t do is pull up pavers or panels to “have a look.” Once you break the waterproofing plane, you’ve exposed the framing to whatever water is behind it, and you won’t know what you’re looking at. A hairline crack in a membrane that’s invisible to a homeowner is an obvious fail to a tile setter. The part that’s usually failing isn’t the Unilock; it’s what’s underneath. That’s also why re-sealing the surface won’t save a bathroom that’s already failed. The water’s already through. Call (432) 547-6806 and we’ll schedule a look. The estimate is free, and you’ll know exactly what you’re dealing with whether you hire us or not.
