Unilock Fence Installation: The San Antonio Owner’s Guide

Unilock fence installation in San Antonio typically runs $3,500 to $9,000 installed, depending on linear footage, base prep, and whether we’re replacing an existing fence or starting from scratch. We stock Unilock-compatible materials and install them with a written price before we start. Most owners call us after a storm or a few brutal Texas summers have done their work – leaning posts, cracked caps, or a section that’s started to pull away from the gate.

What’s interesting is how often the failure isn’t the Unilock product itself. It’s the base underneath. San Antonio’s clay soil expands and contracts with every rain-dry cycle, and a fence is only as straight as what it sits on. We’ll get into that below.

Which Unilock Models This Applies To

Unilock doesn’t manufacture fence panels the way they do pavers and retaining wall blocks. Most “Unilock fences” in San Antonio are actually Unilock pillar and column systems – think Estate Wall, Lineo Dimensional Stone, or U-Cara Multi-Face – paired with fencing sections between them. The Unilock part of the job is the structural pilaster: the block column that anchors the gate and holds the fence sections plumb.

Why that matters: if your Unilock column is failing, the fix isn’t a fence repair. It’s a column rebuild. We’ve pulled apart enough of these to know that a cracked cap or a shifted course usually traces back to a base that was poured too shallow for San Antonio’s soil movement. The block itself is rarely the problem – Unilock makes a solid product. The installation underneath it is where corners get cut.

One compatibility note worth knowing: U-Cara panels use a built-in clip system, so you can’t mix and match faces from other Unilock lines. If you’re matching an existing column, bring us a photo of the face texture and we’ll identify the exact series before we quote. Sawyer Remodel San Antonio is an independent contractor – we’re not affiliated with Unilock – but we’ve installed and repaired enough of their systems to know what fits and what doesn’t.

We also stock and install parts for other brands across our remodeling work – KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone – so if your fence project spills into a patio or outdoor kitchen, we can handle that too.

Signs Your Unilock Fence Installation Is Failing

  • Column leaning away from the gate: The base wasn’t deep enough to resist San Antonio’s clay soil shift, and no amount of tightening the gate hinges will fix it. The column has to come down to the footing.
  • Cracked or spalling caps: Water gets into the cap micro-fissures, freezes in those rare January cold snaps, and pops the surface. Texas sun then bakes the exposed aggregate until it looks worse every month.
  • Gaps between courses: Block courses separating usually means the column is twisting. The base is moving independently of the upper courses. Mortar or adhesive patch won’t hold under that load.
  • Fence section sagging between columns: The fence post brackets weren’t anchored into the Unilock block properly, or the posts themselves are rotting at the base. On San Antonio’s heavy clay, this shows up fastest on the downhill side of a yard after a wet spring.
  • Gate binding or dragging: A gate that scrapes the ground in the morning and swings fine by afternoon is riding on thermal expansion – but if it binds consistently, the column has moved and the reveal is gone.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A home office with a built-in desk and shelves

For San Antonio homeowners, Unilock fence and column installation lands between $3,500 and $9,000. That range covers everything from a single column rebuild paired with new fence sections, up to a full perimeter install with multiple pilasters and gate work.

What drives the price:

  • Linear footage – more fence means more material and more post-setting labor.
  • Base depth and soil condition – we pour footings below the active clay zone, which means extra concrete and excavation on some lots.
  • Column count and height – each Unilock column is a small masonry project on its own.
  • Gate hardware – heavy gates need stronger posts, better hinges, and sometimes a steel insert through the block.
  • Demo and haul-off – removing the failed fence and footing debris adds labor.

Every quote is written and line-itemed before any work starts. The price you approve is the price you pay. If something fails within a year of the install, the 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the repair – and if we have to come back twice, the second visit is free.

DIY or Call Us?

You can absolutely check a few things yourself: look at the footing exposure, check for cracks in the caps, and watch whether the gate binds more in the morning or evening. That gives us a head start on diagnosis.

But rebuilding a Unilock column is not a weekend project. The block isn’t the hard part – it’s the base. Digging a footing deep enough to clear San Antonio’s active clay zone, getting it level in three directions, and then setting block courses that will stay plumb through a wet El Niño year takes experience. We’ve seen DIY rebuilds fail in two seasons because the footing was six inches too shallow. If you’re comfortable with the fence sections themselves, we can quote just the column work and you handle the rest. Call (432) 547-6806 and we’ll tell you straight what needs a pro and what doesn’t.
